Soundproofing vs Acoustic Treatment: What Actually Differs
Soundproofing blocks sound crossing a wall and needs mass. Acoustic treatment tames reflections inside the room. Foam does the second, not the first.

Almost every creator hits this confusion in the same order: the recordings sound boxy, someone suggests panels, the panels go up, the boxiness improves, and then a motorbike goes past and ruins a take anyway. Nothing has gone wrong. The panels did the job they can do, and the job you also wanted them to do is a different discipline with different physics and a very different budget.
Getting the distinction straight tells you what to spend money on and, more usefully, what not to.
What soundproofing actually requires
Stopping sound getting in or out is a question of mass, sealing and decoupling. Sound is pressure, and pressure is blocked by heavy, airtight barriers. That is why a solid brick wall isolates better than a stud partition, and why the weakest point in any room is almost always the door and the gaps around it rather than the wall itself. Air gaps leak sound with startling efficiency: a hollow internal door with a 10mm gap underneath is, acoustically, close to an open doorway.
Decoupling is the other half. If two surfaces touch, vibration travels through the connection regardless of how much mass you have added, which is why serious isolation involves separated frames and resilient mountings rather than layers stuck to an existing wall. It is telling that the UK building regulations treat this as a construction matter at all: Approved Document E: resistance to the passage of sound sets sound-insulation requirements for dwelling-houses, flats, rooms for residential use and schools, and it is written in the language of walls, floors and separating structures rather than surface coverings. All of this is construction work. It is expensive, usually needs a landlord's permission if you rent, and it is genuinely out of scope for most home setups. Recognising that early is worth more than any product.
What acoustic treatment actually does
Treatment is about reflections. In an untreated room your microphone hears your voice twice: once directly, and again a few milliseconds later after it has bounced off a wall. Those delayed copies are what make a recording sound boxy, hollow or distant, and they are what absorption removes. Porous material converts sound energy to a small amount of heat as air moves through it, so the reflection arrives quieter or not at all.
Thickness is the thing that matters and the thing marketing hides. Absorption works down to a wavelength related to the material's depth, so thin foam handles high frequencies well and low frequencies barely at all. That is the honest reason a room can be covered in 25mm foam and still sound muddy: the boom was never in the frequency range the foam could touch. Where to put treatment if you only do one thing
Treat first reflection points before anything else. Sit where you record, and have someone slide a mirror along the wall beside you: wherever you can see the microphone in the mirror is a point where sound bounces straight into it. Those spots, plus the wall directly behind the mic, deliver most of the audible improvement for a small fraction of full coverage.
The corners matter next, because low frequencies build up there. Full wall-to-wall coverage is rarely necessary and can leave a room sounding unnaturally dead, which is its own problem: a completely absorbent room is uncomfortable to speak in and makes voices sound lifeless. The target is controlled, not silent.
The honest order of priority
Room choice beats treatment, and treatment beats microphone upgrades. A carpeted bedroom with soft furnishings and curtains will out-record a bare spare room with hard floors and a glass desk, whatever microphone is in front of you, because most of what a listener hears as amateur audio is the room rather than the capsule. Soft furnishings you already own are free treatment, and a wardrobe of hanging clothes is a genuinely effective absorber.
Mic technique sits alongside that and costs nothing.
